Paolo Di Trapani is a physicist, associate professor of Optics at Insubria University in Como (IT), where he has developed and directed an experimental facility based on high-power
ultrashort pulse (ps-fs) lasers. During his academic career, he has performed experimental and theoretical research in the field of laser physics, ultrafast linear, nonlinear and quantum optics, with special emphasis on light-pulse spatio-temporal localization and laser microfabrication.
Additionally, Paolo has been active in developing new nanostructured materials for reproducing the optical properties of the sky, and a related technology for artificial illumination. Co-author of 160 publications, co-inventor of 130 patent applica-tions, Paolo acted as principal Investigator of >20 international research projects, with over €20m fund raising. Founder and director of VINO – the “Virtual Institute for Nonlinear Optics”, of STELLA - the “School for Training in Experiments with Lasers and Laser Applications”, he also founded and directed “Di Luce in Luce”, a wide-audience science-and-art theatrical exhibition, which tackles the indoor reconstruction of outdoor natural light and colour effects. Paolo has been also Founder and is currently the CEO of the academic spin-off CoeLux Srl, which has developed and positioned on the market a disruptive technology, capable of replacing artificial illumination by means of LED-based artificial win-dows and skylights that reproduce the natural light, the visual appearance and the perceived infinite depth of the sky and the sun.
